SNHU Women's Tennis to Face Two Division I Opponents
MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team will face a pair of Division I opponents as part of its 2010 spring season. The Penmen will face Temple University on Sunday, January 24 at 10:00 am in a match at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. SNHU will then travel to face Dartmouth on Saturday, February 27 at 12:00 pm.
"I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to play these matches. Having the opportunity to play nationally-recognized programs such as Dartmouth and Temple has the potential to boost our already-growing women's tennis program," said SNHU women's tennis coach Greg Coache. "Our team is extremely excited about how we are starting off our season.
In his third season, Coache has turned the SNHU women's tennis program into one of the top teams in the region. After reaching the Northeast-10 semifinals for the first time in program history in 2007-08, the Penmen went 12-5 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, the first NCAA appearance in program history.
Temple is one of the top programs in the Atlantic 10 Conference, as it reached the A-10 championship match last season after capturing the league's tournament title the prior season. In 2008-09 the Owls posted a 17-6 mark. Dartmouth is coming off an 8-14 2008-09 season, but two years ago the Big Green posted a school record 16-4 mark. Both Temple and Dartmouth open their seasons this weekend, with the pair facing off Saturday prior to the Penmen facing the Owls on Sunday.
"When I speak to recruits about our rising program, these are the types of matches that get them excited about where SNHU tennis is heading. Top recruits really take notice of the level of competition that they get to play," said Coache. "Also, I hope that this creates an in-state rivalry (with Dartmouth) that can be scheduled every year, and that other top programs will take notice of the level of competition that we are playing and look to add us to their schedules."
