Women's Soccer Ties Bridgeport in Season Opener
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - A goal by freshman
Ariel Teixeira (Warren, RI) with just over 16
minutes to play in regulation allowed Southern New Hampshire
University to tie the University of Bridgeport 1-1 in women's
soccer Friday night. The contest marked the season opener for
both schools.
The host Purple Knights, who reached the NCAA Tournament last season, struck first. Sofia Hoflin would head home a ball that was set up by crossing passes by Linda Velaj and Katie Stanley just past the game's 19 minute mark. Bridgeport would carry that 1-0 lead into halftime.
Southern New Hampshire would tie the game at the 73:28 mark. Teixeira took advantage of a misplay by a Bridgeport defender and put a shot past UB keeper Elina Yletyinen to tie the game on the unassisted goal.
After regulation, neither team would find the back of the net in two 10-minute overtime periods.
SNHU goalie Stef Young (Natick, MA) made eight saves for the Penmen while Yletyinen made seven stops for the Purple Knights. Bridgeport held an 18-15 shot advantage on the evening.
The SNHU women's soccer team is idle until Tuesday, September 9, when it travels to Saint Michael's College for a 4:00 contest.
