2018 GOOGLE CLOUD ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT SOFTBALL TEAMS

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Maddy Barone (Halifax, Mass.) of the Southern New Hampshire University softball team was named to the 2018 Google Cloud NCAA Division II Academic All-District Team Thursday, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Barone landed a spot on the NCAA Division II District 1 Team.

The Google Cloud Academic All-District Softball Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, possess a 3.30 cumulative GPA and be a starter of key reserve. NCAA Division II Academic All-District honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

She has fired a league-best 10 shutouts, owns the third lowest earned run average (1.69), sits fourth in both wins (18), strikeouts (139) and innings pitched (161.2). Barone ranks sixth in batting average against (.219) and her 6.02 strikeouts per game is the seventh-highest average the in league this season. Her 31 appearances are the fifth-most amongst NE10 pitchers, and in 24 of those outings, Barone has surrendered two earned runs or fewer.

The NCAA Division II District 1 consists of members of the NE10, Central Athletic Collegiate Conference and East Coast Conference. Through the Academic All-America program, Google Cloud names separate teams at each the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III levels, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

After rallying to walk off in their NCAA East 2 Regional opener on Thursday, the Penmen (38-12) return to action Friday when they take on Saint Anselm College in a second round matchup at 3 p.m.
