NE-10 Softball Preseason Poll Released, SNHU Picked Second in Division

NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE RELEASE

SOUTH EASTON, Mass.—The Southern New Hampshire University softball team has been picked to finish second in the Northeast Division out of eight schools in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason coaches' poll, as announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon.  The Penmen received 102 points along with six first place votes to fall just shy of Umass Lowell, which was picked to win the Northeast Division with 108 points and 10 first place votes.

Stonehill College, Merrimack College, Franklin Pierce University, Saint Anselm College, Bentley University, and Saint Michael's College round out the Northeast Division poll.

In the Southwest Divison, Southern Connecticut State University was picked to repeat as the regular season conference champions receiving 11 first place votes and 108 points. The University of New Haven was selected as the runner-up with 90 points and one first place nod, while Adelphi University, Le Moyne College, and Assumption College each received first place votes as well. Rounding out the Southwest Division was Pace, American International, and Saint Rose.

The Northeast-10 is entering its first season of divisional play in the sport of softball in 2013, as teams will play 21 divisional games and eight more contests of crossover play. The top four teams from each division – based on their 21-game divisional record – will advance to the Northeast-10 Championship.

Southern New Hampshire, which lost only one senior, is coming off of a program best 28-19 record. The record-breaking season earned the Penmen a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament for the third time in five years. However, SNHU would fall short in the first single-elimination round to Assumption College, who would go on to be the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Champions, by a score of 3-2.

SNHU opens the 2013 campaign when it travels to Claremont, Florida to play eight games in four days at the National Training Center. The Penmen will begin play against Georgian Court on Sunday, March 3 at 9:00 a.m. Conference action will begin after the team returns on Saturday, March 16 as the Penmen travel to Southern Connecticut State for a doubleheader with game times at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
