MANCHESTER, N.H. – Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) and Rob Murray (Marblehead, Mass.) each added six points in a 15-10 victory for the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team over Saint Anselm College Wednesday evening on Larkin Field in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Penmen are now 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the league, while the Hawks fall to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
Joyce led the offense in goals with five, along with an assist, while Murray had one tally and five assists in the win. Jeremy Buckley (Norwell, Mass.) and Cory Allen (Suffield, Conn.) each added three goals, while Phil LaTorre (Londonderry, N.H.) had a goal and an assist, and Zach Jacobs (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Joe Daly (Woburn, Mass.) scored a goal apiece for SNHU.
The Penmen jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter when Joyce scored unassisted at the 12:59 mark to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. However, the Hawks answered not long after with a Jake Mallinson goal to tie it up with 9:50 left. SNHU closed out the quarter with two more goals, including a man-up opportunity from LaTorre, and another Joyce goal from Murray to up the lead to 3-1.
Saint Anselm quickly tied the game up at 3-3 in the second quarter, after scoring back-to-back goals, but Murray, Buckley, and Joyce each answered with a goal apiece to regain the lead at 6-3 with 3:02 to play. The Hawks were able to sneak in one more score before the half to cut the lead to two-goals to end the second quarter.
The Penmen dominated the third quarter scoring the first five goals, including three man-up scores, and outscoring Saint Anselm 6-1, to take their biggest lead of the game at 12-5 heading into the fourth.
The Hawks came out in the fourth scoring just 43 seconds in to cut SNHU's lead to six goals. Buckley notched his third score of the game to answer, and regain the seven-goal lead on another man-up opportunity, but Saint Anselm scored the next three to trail by just four goals with 5:07 remaining. With 2:30 left to play, Joyce and Daly scored back-to-back insurance goals for the Penmen to up the lead, and to secure the win.
Morgan Weireter (Oak Park, Calif.) made 16 saves in net for the Penmen en route to the win, while James O'Neill had 11 saves for the Hawks.
The Penmen return to action on Saturday, April 5 when they host Merrimack for a 1:00 p.m. league game on Larkin Field.
