Men's Lacrosse Holds Off Florida Southern 10-8
LAKELAND, Fla. – Freshman Greg Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) totaled three goals and two assists as Southern New Hampshire University held off a late Florida Southern College rally to post a 10-8 win in men’s lacrosse Monday afternoon at Bryant Stadium. The Penmen improved to 2-1 with the win, while the Mocs are 2-6 on the season.
Reynolds led five SNHU goal scorers on the afternoon. Andrew Brown (Marshfield, Mass.) also recorded three goals, while Keith Merluzzo (Billerica, Mass.) added two goals and an assist. Gary McKay (Billerica, Mass.) won 10-of-15 faceoffs and registered a goal, while Nick Zuccala (Manchester, N.H.) also added a goal.
Cam Holding led Florida Southern with five goals, while Corey Brown notched a goal and four assists.
The Penmen opened up a 2-0 lead just 1:47 into the game as Brown and McKay scored 16 seconds apart. Southern New Hampshire held a 2-1 lead after one quarter and made it 4-1 four minutes into the second quarter on a Merluzzo tally. SNHU led 6-3 at intermission.
Trailing 7-4, Florida Southern scored two goals in the final 1:52 of the third quarter to pull within 7-6, then the Mocs tied the game on a man-up goal by Holding 53 seconds into the fourth quarter. Reynolds reclaimed the lead for the Penmen with 9:34 left, then Brown would make it 9-7 18 seconds later. Holding would halve the lead with another man-advantage goal 52 seconds later, but Reynolds would add an insurance goal with 43 seconds to play.
Eric Gunst (Exeter, N.H.) made 12 saves in goal for SNHU as the Mocs outshot the Penmen 39-35, including 25-16 in the second half. Florida Southern goalie Andrew Almansberger turned aside 14 shots.
Southern New Hampshire wraps up its two-game Florida swing Tuesday with a 7:00 contest at Saint Leo University.
