Balanced Effort Leads Men's Basketball Past AIC 67-57
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – BJ Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) paced four players in double figures with 15 points as Southern New Hampshire University outlasted American International College 67-57 in Northeast-10 men's basketball Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium. The Penmen snapped a two-game slide and improved to 12-7 and 8-7 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets are now 6-13 and 3-12 in the league.
Cardarelli was 5-9 from the floor and also added five rebounds and three assists. Phillip Tripodakis (Athens, Greece) and Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) each knocked down three three-pointers and recorded 11 points, while Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) also scored 11.
Ricky Hudson, Spencer Braithwaite and Janek Schmidkunz each finished with 13 points for American International.
The hosts opened up an 11-4 lead 3:39 into the game before a 7-0 run capped by a CJ Marriro (Boston, Mass.) three at the 13:42 mark tied the game 11-11. AIC led much of the first half, but the Penmen took their second and final lead of the game on a Tripodakis three with 3:53 left that made it 28-27. SNHU held the Yellow Jackets scoreless for the final 5:22 of the first half and went on a 14-0 run to open a 36-27 lead at intermission.
AIC chipped away at the lead, outscoring SNHU 13-7 over the first 7:11 to pull within three, 43-40, with 12:49 left on a Braithwaite three. The Penmen responded with a 11-2 run capped by a Mike Stys (Hooksett, N.H.) basket with 6:45 left that made it 54-42. American International cut the lead to eight three times down the stretch, the last on a basket with 1:56 left, but could get no closer.
Southern New Hampshire was 11-27 (40.7%) behind the arc and shot 43.4% for the game while limiting the Yellow Jackets to 36.8% shooting. The Penmen, who outrebounded AIC 39-31, were 10-11 at the free throw line and had 21 assists on 23 baskets, led by six by Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro).
Southern New Hampshire hosts crosstown rival No. 22 Saint Anselm College Wednesday, February 6 in a 7:30 game at the SNHU Fieldhouse. Fans are encouraged to wear white for the "Wednesday Whiteout".
