Saint Anselm Rallies Past Baseball

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Host Saint Anselm College scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim a 6-5 Northeast-10 baseball victory against Southern New Hampshire University at Sullivan Park Monday afternoon.  The Hawks improve to 17-16 and 7-8 in the NE-10 with the victory, while the Penmen are now 18-16 and 6-8 in the league.

Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) led Southern New Hampshire with three hits and a pair of runs batted in.  Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.), Albert Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) and Zachary Robins (Westford, Mass.) each finished with two hits.  Robert Kelly led Saint Anselm with three hits, while Dan Lagasse was 2-4 with three RBI.

Trailing 5-3 entering the eighth, the Hawks roped back-to-back doubles by Kelly and Matt Sucharewicz off Penmen reliever Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to make it 5-4.  Zach LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) replaced Massad and after getting the next batter to fly out, gave up a single to T.J. Murphy and a double to Lagasse to make it 5-5.  A groundout to the right side by Jeff Criscuolo with the infield in brought home Murphy as the eventual winning run.

Stanton would get the tying run into scoring position to lead off the ninth for Southern New Hampshire, hitting an opposite-field double down the right field line.  Stanton would move to third with two outs on a groundout by Boulter but was stranded to end the game.

SNHU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second as Boulter led off with a single and scored on a Robins double.  Lagasse would belt a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame, but the guests would tie the game in the third as Wollerman led off with a single and scored on a single by Boulter.  Saint Anselm would retake the lead in the bottom of the third as James Garrigan hit a solo round-tripper to right-center.

The Penmen would retake the lead with two runs in the fifth and tacked on another in the sixth.  In the fifth Stanton led off with a double and went to third on a single to right by Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.).  Stanton would score on a groundout by Boulter while O'Neil scored on a sac fly by Bobby Wronski (Arlington, Mass.).  In the sixth Robins led off with a single to right and advanced on an error by the right fielder.  He scored on a sac fly by Tim Rines (Merrimack, N.H.).

James Farrington earned the win in 1.1 innings of relief for Saint Anselm, allowing one hit, while LeBarron took the loss.  SNHU starter Junior Mendez (Patchogue, N.Y.) allowed nine hits and three runs in seven innings of work and struck out three without walking a batter.  He only surrendered three hits over his final four innings of work.

Southern New Hampshire hosts Saint Anselm Wednesday at 3:30 pm in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.
