First Annual Penmen Days of Giving Exceeds Expectations; Raises More Than $81,000 for Athletics

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire University's first annual Penmen Days of Giving was a giant success, surpassing its original goal and raising $81,586 for the Department of Athletics.

Penmen Days of Giving, a two-week fundraising challenge that pitted each intercollegiate team against the others in a friendly competition, invited family, friends, alumni, donors, and community members to participate from March 20 to April 3, with a collective goal of generating $50,000. In the end, 2,094 donors participated in the challenge and reached 163 percent of the initial goal.

In addition to the funds raised by each team, generous alumnus and die-hard Penmen fan Mark Ouellette '77 put forth a bonus gift, with the team that raised the most money and the team that rallied the most donors each receiving an additional $2,500 to benefit their programs.

Baseball collected both of those prizes, topping the respective leaderboards with 581 donors and $17,539. Field hockey (544), softball (250), men's lacrosse (167) and women's soccer (126) filled out the top five in total number of donors rallied, while men's lacrosse ($8,700), field hockey ($8,403), women's basketball ($7,406) and softball ($7,322) helped lead the way in dollars raised.

"For our first experience with this type of initiative, I was incredibly pleased with the participation by alumni, fans, staff and, especially, our student-athletes and coaches," said Director of Athletics Anthony Fallacaro. "Their enthusiastic participation made our first annual Penmen Days of Giving such a great success."

"I also cannot thank all of the donors enough for their support of Penmen Athletics and, in particular, our talented student-athletes. We are really looking forward to next year's Penmen Days of Giving challenge, as we hope this will serve as our annual giving campaign for athletics and alumni."

The teams keep 100 percent of what they raised, with the money directly benefiting student-athletes by offsetting the out-of-pocket costs typically paid by players for trips to out-of-region competitions, extra equipment, and personal- and professional-development opportunities.
