Trio of Winter Teams Set for Weekend NE10 Championship Play

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire University will be sending three of its winter teams into battle this weekend, as Northeast-10 Championship play begins for both women's and men's basketball, as well as men's ice hockey.

Women's Basketball

Women's basketball, seeded fourth in the Northeast Division, will host its first-ever postseason game Friday, Feb. 23 (7 p.m.) when it welcomes in the Southwest's No. 5 seed, the College of Saint Rose, for a first round matchup at the SNHU Fieldhouse. Saint Rose dealt the Penmen a 69-66 loss in Albany, N.Y., back on Jan. 17, while this will mark the first meeting between the two teams in the NE10 postseason. 

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and children, and $1 for students with a valid ID from a Northeast-10 institution. SNHU students, with a valid ID, will receive free admission, courtesy of SNHU Athletic Marketing. For those not able to be in attendance, the game will be streamed live at YouTube.com/SNHUPenmen, while live stats will be available at SNHUPenmen.com.

The winner of the contest will travel to Southern Connecticut State University – the top seed in the Southwest – for a quarterfinal tilt Sunday, Feb. 25 (3 p.m.). SNHU recorded a 64-53 win at Southern Connecticut on Jan. 6 in the only meeting between the two squads this season.

The Penmen are 2-6 (.250) all-time in the Northeast-10 Championship and will be looking for their first victory in the tournament since 2011.

Men's Basketball

The No. 5 seed in the Northeast Division, men's basketball will hit the road to take on Southern Connecticut, the No. 4 seed in the Southwest, Friday, Feb. 23 (7 p.m.) in a first round clash at the Moore Fieldhouse. The Penmen fell to Southern Connecticut, 75-70, in New Haven, Conn., back on Jan. 6 in this season's only meeting. This will be the third NE10 Championship meeting between the two clubs – and the third on the home floor of the Owls – with Southern Connecticut picking up a 75-63 quarterfinal win in 2014 before SNHU evened the score with a 107-104 overtime triumph in the quarterfinal round in 2016.

The victor will earn a quarterfinal date with the Northeast's top seed, Saint Anselm College, on Sunday, Feb. 25 (3 p.m.). SNHU halved the two meetings with the crosstown-rival Hawks this season, stealing an 86-85 win on the road back on Nov. 29, while Saint Anselm most recently posted a 68-59 victory at the SNHU Arena on Feb. 14.

The Penmen are 21-12 (.636) all-time in the Northeast-10 Championship, making trips to the finals in three of the last five seasons, while capturing titles in 2013 and 2016. SNHU, which lost in the final to Saint Anselm last season, has not bowed out in the first round since 2008.

Men's Ice Hockey 

Fourth-seeded men's ice hockey will make the short trip across town to battle Saint Anselm in an NE10 semifinal at Sullivan Arena on Saturday, Feb. 24 (7 p.m.). The Hawks took all three regular-season meetings, downing the Penmen at home, 4-2, on both Nov. 10 and Feb. 16, before capping the schedule with a 4-1 victory at the SNHU Arena on Feb. 17. This will be the 11th postseason meeting between the two clubs, with Saint Anselm holding a 9-1 advantage.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and children, and $1 for students with a valid ID from a Northeast-10 institution. Tickets are free for the first 200 SNHU students in attendance, while a shuttle from the SNHU campus to the game will be available for students, who can sign up at snhupenmen.com/bus.

The winner will advance to the NE10 title game against the victor of second-seeded Saint Michael's College and third-seeded Assumption College, which will square off earlier Saturday at 4 p.m. The title game will take place at the highest remaining seed on Saturday, March 3.

The Penmen are 12-14 (.462) all-time in the tournament, reaching the championship on five occasions and capturing a title in 2014.
