Student-Athlete Spotlight: Daniela Abruzzese
Junior defender Daniela Abruzzese (Parsippany, N.J.) makes quite an impact for the Southern New Hampshire University women’s soccer team’s back line. In her personal life, Abruzzese is a member of the SNHU Honors Program, lives in a Residential Learning Community, is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and serves on the SAAC Executive Board, and spent her last spring break helping the less-fortunate. In this week’s Student-Athlete Spotlight, fans will get an “off the field” look at one of the Penmen’s busiest student-athletes.
Name: Daniela Abruzzese
Major: Business Administration
Pregame routine: My pregame routine is basic and consistent. I stretch, get treatment, change into my uniform, wet my hair to make sure I can put it in a bun. My cleats and shin guards go on last. I listen to my iPod from the moment I get into the locker room until I step onto the field. I drink two waters and a Gatorade before every game, and on the weekends I always eat one chocolate chip pancake before our game.
Something people don’t know about me: Most people don’t know that I absolutely love animals and love kids. I raised three seeing-eye dogs when I was in high school and I also was a part of “Big Brothers, Big Sisters”. I still communicate with my “big brother” today!
The moment I am most proud of: The moment I am most proud of in my life is probably when I visited South Africa for two weeks to help the children of Kurland Village. Seeing all of the kids’ reactions after we finished the safe house for them was one of the most amazing feelings I have ever had.
Favorite Athlete: My favorite athlete is Derek Jeter because he is a class act on and off the field. He is a consistent player on the field, has led the Yankees to may World Series and is also a captain. Off the field he participates in community service and leaves his personal life out of the press. He balances being an athlete and a ‘celebrity’ very well.
Favorite meal in the SNHU Dining Center: An omelet on the weekends! I can never wait in line during the week since I always have to get to class, but on the weekends the omelet line is open later.
Three items I would want if I was stranded on a desert island: The largest case of water possible for survival, a soccer ball for entertainment, and a computer to keep in touch with family and friends.
What’s on my iPod: Recently I have been getting into some pop-country while I find very relaxing and nice to listen to. Taylor Swift is one of my favorites. I also really love oldies music in the summer, and The Fray and James Morrison are classics to me.
In five years: In five years I am hoping to have my graduate degree from fashion school and working in New York City or Boston for a top designer like Prada of Michael Kors. I hope to be living on my own apartment with two dogs and a few of my best friends. I want to be enjoying life and be happy.
One item I can’t live without: My stuffed animal bunny. I’ve had him since I was a little girl.
Places I would like to visit someday: I am hoping to study abroad in Australia, and I want to travel to Europe when I get older as well.
